The top is removeable so it can be cleaned. Was originally purchased in Manhattan during the early 1960s. Has had some restoration over its lifetime. Probably dates from the 1600s or 1700s. Best guess is Italian. 

Measures 21" tall by 34" wide by 24" deep.
