Looks like it originally had red paint & strap hinges. Over its lifetime it was painted black & the black has worn off to show the red. The original hinges probably broke so other hinges were added to take the place. The latch on the front was probably also added over the years so they could lock up the sugar. There is a lock on the inside for the section of the box that held the sugar. We do not have the key but someone could find a replacement.
We're thinking early 1800s. It has cut nails. We think the divider is original & we think the lid is original. The patina on the lid is lighter than on the rest of the trunk ~ Just wear.
